In early February, Air Products and ExxonMobil opened a facility for the production of hydrogen. The integration of the ExxonMobil refinery with the Air Products new hydrogen plant will improve the energy efficiency by over 15% and reduce CO2 emissions by 200,000 tons annually. That is comparable to an annual reduction of 90,000 cars on the road.
Joop Atsma, the Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Environment, performed the official opening with Mayor Aboutaleb and Hans Smits, CEO, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam. In his speech, the Secretary of State pointed out that the importance of the new plant cannot be underestimated. "We need plants such as this one nationally and internationally if we want to attain our European mid and long term environmental ambitions. Today, Air Products and ExxonMobil demonstrate that focusing on investment and integration of industrial processes can lead to considerable energy savings and CO2 emissions reductions."
