The Rotterdam network company Stedin has started construction work on a steam network in the Botlek area. On Wednesday, 15 February, Stedin signed the contracts with AVR - a waste processing company and steam supplier, and with Emerald Kalama Chemical (EKC) - a chemical company and steam consumer. The project will significantly contribute to the Rotterdam climate goal of a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025.
The
Rotterdam Climate Initiative is pleased with the green light for the steam
network. Over the past years, the project has been actively backed and financed
by the Rotterdam Climate Initiative through the Rotterdam's so-called
"Green Deal" with the government.
A better environment and a stronger economy
Alexandra Van Huffelen, alderman
(sustainability, amongst other things): "The construction of the steam
network is a great example of the ambitious way that we are collaborating
toward a better environment while contributing to a stronger economy. We are
counting on other companies to join the network soon."
CO2 reduction
The purpose of the network is to
transport steam from one plant to the surrounding plants who need it for their
production. These plants are now generating steam using fossil fuels at high
costs. The first section of the network will be built in the western part of
the industrial area; however, the objective is to extend the network to the
Botlek area within the foreseeable future. Plants located along the route may
either contribute or consume steam, according to their needs. The entire steam
network will reduce CO2 emissions by over 200,000 tons annually, thus improving
the air quality.
Extending the steam network
Jeroen DE Swart, Stedin Director: "Stedin is committed to providing its customers of energy in a safe and reliable way, now and in the future. That is why we are already investing in the development of knowledge and expertise in the area of new energy infrastructures, including steam and CO2. The
Stedin steam network represents a big step towards a sustainable future. In Botlek West, AVR and EKC are our first customers. The idea is to have many more companies join in, and to extend the network to other regions in the Botlek."
In addition to Stedin, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam and development and construction company Visser & Smit Hanab are among the initiators of the steam network.
