The construction of a green roof on a block of flats in Rotterdam Charlois, marked the achievement of an important milestone: Rotterdam now has 100,000 m2 of green rooftops. Green roofs form a buffer to absorb excess rain water, enhance Rotterdam's 'green' appeal, filter dust particles from the atmosphere and extend the life of the roofs.
In cooperation with the Hollandse Delta Water Board and the Water Board of Schieland and Krimpenerwaard, the City of Rotterdam is granting a subsidy of € 30.00 per m2 to stimulate the installation of green roofs. Our ambition is to have at least 160,000 m2 of green roofs installed in Rotterdam by the end of 2014. The subsidy programme is part of Rotterdam's climate adaptation programme for the Rotterdam Climate Initiative: Rotterdam Climate Proof.
Green rooftops in Charlois
This special 100,00m2 milestone was reached with the completion of the green sedum rooftop on the Meyenhage-de Schere block of flats in Rotterdam Charlois. The chairman of the Owners' Association, Mr Verberne, received a gift as a token of appreciation from Alderman Alexandra Van Huffelen (Sustainability, Inner City and Public Spaces) and Maarten van Hulst (Hollandse Delta Water Board). 450 m2 of green rooftop was installed on the shops near the gallery. And 875 m2 was installed on the roof of the gallery itself. More owners' associations in the neighbourhood are now intending to install a green roof.
