100th charging point for electric cars in Rotterdam

2012-06-11

By plugging the electric car into the charging pole at the Heemraadssingel, Alexandra van Huffelen (alderman for Sustainability, City Center and Public Spaces) and Karen Bebelaar (portfolio holder for the Submunicipality of Delfshaven ) activated the 100th charging point for electric cars in Rotterdam.  With that, Rotterdam made its first big step towards its objective of having 1,000 charging points for electric cars in the city by the end of 2014.

Electric driving is clean, quiet and energy efficient; that is why Rotterdam is stimulating the introduction of this type of transport. 'As a city, we especially want to create the right conditions for stimulating the development of electric driving. We are providing a good charging infrastructure for cars, stimulating various trial projects and we are setting a good example by also choosing electricity for the municipal fleet. Of course, we are using green electricity', according to alderman Van Huffelen.

Charging points in Rotterdam

Increasingly, more companies and private individuals are applying for subsidies to install a charging point for electric cars on their own property. For electric cars which are parked in the street, the city has placed special charging poles such as this one on the Heemraadssingel. In addition, the City of Rotterdam is also making sure that there are charging points at strategic locations throughout the city. This basic network of public charging points can be found both in the street and in car parks, which
makes electric driving increasingly easier in Rotterdam. This is good for the quality of life in the city and for people's health.
