International Conference Deltas in times of climate change II

The city of Rotterdam, the Dutch research programme Knowledge for Climate and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment will organize the second international Delta conference in the Netherlands. The conference will be held in Rotterdam, from 24-26 September 2014. The theme of the conference is: 'Opportunities for people, science, cities and business'. Read more

Rotterdam Mayor Aboutaleb, Clinton and Bloomberg in climate change talks

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is conducting a working visit to New York between 5 and 8 May.  He was invited by former President Bill Clinton, chairman of the Clinton Global Initiative, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to participate in a round-table conference on the consequences of climate change to urban areas. He is also set to talk with New York authorities about safety, the fight against crime, education and water management.  Read more

Climate adaptation strategy leads to new Memorandum of Understanding Ho Chi Minh City and Rotterdam

At 8 April 2013, the completed climate adaption strategy of Ho Chi Minh City has been offered during an official gathering at Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Head office. Next Ho Chi Minh City and the City of Rotterdam signed a new Memorandum of Understanding. Ho Chi Minh City is one of the cities in the knowledge network Connecting Delta Cities. Read more

Rotterdam takes next step in making the city and port sustainable

Rotterdam is a leader in the Netherlands in its sustainability policy. The ambitions are high and much has been achieved since the start of this collegium in 2010. "This is not easy and we cannot do it alone”, according to Alexandra van Huffelen, Vice Mayor Sustainability, City Center and Public Spaces. The Second Rotterdam Sustainability Dinner, entitled "The Next Step," was attended by over 100 top executives from NGOs, port companies, industry and construction. Rotterdam wants to go further: "In Rotterdam we tackle things together. And we do this for a sustainable city and port, because it offers economic opportunities and because it creates jobs, "said Van Huffelen.

Announcement Deltas in Times of Climate Change II

The first 'Deltas in Times of Climate Change’ conference was held in 2010, drawing about 1200 participants from all over the world. Since then awareness has risen about the urgency and importance of cooperation among deltas to act. As more knowledge is gained, climate adaptation strategies have been developed and measures taken. Yet a great deal remains to be done. How can risk analysis be improved? Which measures are most effective? How should they be best financed and implemented? Which stakeholders should be involved? These topics and many more will be discussed in a lively setting during the conference in 2014, Deltas in Times of Climate Change II from 24 till 26 September 2014.

Rotterdam on NY1 News

With an eye toward how New York will prepare for the next Sandy, Josh Robin of NY1 News and Juan Manuel Benitez of NY1 Noticias traveled to the Netherlands in January to produce the special series, "Fighting the Tide." Rotterdam and the 1953 North Sea flood disaster

On the night of 31 January and the morning of 1 February 1953, the Netherlands was struck by a major flood. Sections of Rotterdam also stood under water, such as the floodplains along the Nieuwe Maas or parts of the island of IJsselmonde where, in total, ten people lost their lives. These pictures give you an impression of the consequences of this disaster for Rotterdam.
