Official launch ceremony E-KOTUG: Europe’s first hybrid tugboat

During this year’s traditional and well attended “Herring Party” on June 6th 2012, the official and spectacular launch ceremony of the RT Adriaan into the E-KOTUG was held in Rotterdam. The commissioning of the E-KOTUG was performed by Mrs Alexandra van Huffelen, vice-mayor for Sustainability of the City of Rotterdam.

100th charging point for electric cars in Rotterdam

By plugging the electric car into the charging pole at the Heemraadssingel, Alexandra van Huffelen (alderman for Sustainability, City Center and Public Spaces) and Karen Bebelaar (portfolio holder for the Submunicipality of Delfshaven ) activated the 100th charging point for electric cars in Rotterdam.  With that, Rotterdam made its first big step towards its objective of having 1,000 charging points for electric cars in the city by the end of 2014.

100,000 m2 of green roofs in Rotterdam

The construction of a green roof on a block of flats in Rotterdam Charlois, marked the achievement of an important milestone: Rotterdam now has 100,000 m2 of green rooftops. Green roofs form a buffer to absorb excess rain water, enhance Rotterdam's 'green' appeal, filter dust particles from the atmosphere and extend the life of the roofs.

Biomass Journey to Brazil

Last May, a delegation led by Ruud Lubbers, Chairman of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative Council, visited Brazil. The purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities for collaboration in the production and export of solid and liquid biomass (e.g. wood, ethanol, soy, biodiesel). The delegation was composed of approximately 25 representatives of the entire biomass chain: ports, the energy and fuel sector, the chemical industry, research and consultancy, governments, storage and transshipment.  There were scheduled meetings with companies, scientists, and local governments at various levels.

Hoek van Holland Starts Unique Solar Energy Project

In only four weeks time, Woningbouwvereniging Hoek van Holland (WVH Housing association) and its partner, WAIFER Nederland, pulled off an entire solar energy project. Seven residences were supplied with solar panels without any investment on the part of the housing association or the tenants. Covering two thirds of the tenant's power bills, the solar panels were brought into use from a tower waggon by the Rotterdam alderman for Sustainability, Alexandra van Huffelen.

Rotterdam proclaimed Solar City 2012

On 7 May, Rotterdam was proclaimed Solar City 2012, marking the official starting point for the national Solar Days event. Citizens and organisations with solar energy as part of their strategy will meet and discuss topics of interest. During the event, which may be viewed live through the Twitter broadcast, #SolarDaysNL, policy makers will learn the requirements for residents to generate solar energy in their areas. The meeting is organised by the Solar Days partners in close collaboration with the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.

Rotterdam Industry Improves Energy Efficiency

Results for the Rotterdam industrial sector indicate that its energie efficiency has improved at a rate of 1 percent annually between 2006 and 2010, which is about equal to the national average figure. On average, Deltalinqs Energy Forum member companies have produced 1.6 percent more efficiently. This is a significant improvement in comparison to the other Rotterdam companies. Findings are based on results from AgentschapNl, which resides under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture, and Innovation (EL&I).
