Hospital energy savings: cost benefits and fewer CO2 emissions

Hospitals can save more on their energy consumption. A general survey conducted by TNO DuCHA (Dutch Centre for Health Assets) indicates that on average, hospitals can save 12% on their energy consumption. Substantial savings are also possible for the hospitals in our region, especially in the fields of lighting, ventilation, and humidifiers. These results were presented during four Energy Master Classes for hospitals held in 2011. On 8 February 2012, the final master class was held in the Maasstad Hospital, Rotterdam.

At the end of last year, Agentschap NL invited four renowned German journalists to visit the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. They were especially interested to learn about CCS and sustainable energy. They reported their findings on the Rotterdam sustainability strategy in two German publications.

Rotterdam's sustainability on focus in Colombia

As part of Rio+20, Colombia's second national newspaper, El Espectador, will feature topics related to sustainability in the spring of 2012. One of the first topics is "Sustainable Cities." Alexandra Van Huffelen, alderman, was recently interviewed about the Rotterdam sustainability strategy. She indicated, amongst other things, what needs to be taken into consideration by cities that want to become "sustainable cities."

Rotterdam to receive new €100 million district heating network

Visser & Smit Hanab, a VolkerWessels company, has won the contract for the design, construction, and maintenance of a unique heating system in the Rotterdam area. Construction of a heating network was an initiative of Warmtebedrijf Rotterdam. The network will allow for the reuse of residual heat that the industry in the port of Rotterdam emits. A pipeline route measuring 26 kilometres will transport the heat to Rotterdam Zuid.

Design of Benthemplein water plaza revealed

The final design of the Water Plaza at Benthemplein (plaza across the Hofplein Theatre) has been revealed. The Executive Board of the Rotterdam North sub-municipality adopted the layout plan on 20 December 2011. This is a big step towards transforming this plaza into an attractive city plaza that offers space for water, sports and greenery. The design is by DE URBANISTEN.
